    National Fire Prevention Committee (NFPC)

  • Fire Prevention Overview

  • The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public to take precautions to prevent potentially harmful fires, and be educated about surviving them. It is a proactive method of reducing emergencies and the damage caused by them.

Tasked with educating the community regarding fire safety. The Fire Prevention Division conducts building inspections to make sure they are compliant with safety codes.

Fire prevention education encompasses the following key messages:

    • Stop, Drop, and Roll technique—This is the most effective way to smother flames if your clothes catch on fire.
    • Install a smoke detector. They reduce the chance of mortality by 50 percent.
    • Regularly maintain smoke detectors. The most common cause of non-working detectors is missing or faulty batteries. Batteries should be changed twice per year.
    • Install a wet pipe sprinkler system. It will get the water to the fire quicker than any other method.
