Inaugural Fire Safety Workshop for Children at One Utama Shopping Centre

Kuala Lumpur: Fire Prevention Council Malaysia (FIPCOM), in collaboration with CIMB Foundation through CIMB Community Link, and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia) are organising the first Fire Safety Workshop 2009 for children at the Ground Floor, Main Entrance One Utama, New Wing on 30 and 31 May 2009. YB Dato’ Seri Kong Cho Ha, Minister of Housing and Local Government will be officiating the event on 30 May 2009 at 11.00 a.m., at the same venue.

The Fire Safety Workshop is free-of-charge and is open to children aged 4 to 12 years old, for them to learn about fire escape methods and improve their knowledge on fire preventions. The workshop will be held for 2 days at the shopping centre, with 5 one-hour sessions each day.

The workshop will be divided into 6 steps, which include product explanation and demonstration by qualified volunteers on fire escape methods and how to overcome the obstacles in the event of a fire. A certificate of attendance will be given to those who successfully complete the entire 6-step process.

The Fire Safety Workshop starts from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m., and there will be a special appearance by “DOREMI” – a children artists group who will perform the “Little Fire Fighter” song to encourage children’s participation in the workshop.

In addition to the fire safety aspect to the workshop, the children will have the opportunity to learn the history of the Malaysian Fire Services at the Fire Museum.

Souvenirs and gifts will be given away to the participating children on a first-come-first-serve basis. Children who registered their names through FIPCOM website will also get a Personal Data Card for future use.

Through the support of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local government agencies, FIPCOM serves as a platform to educate and contribute to the society and also be part of a Safer Malaysia.
